TOPSOIL IS ESSENTIAL FOR FLOURISHING PLANTS

General, by maureen.

One of the most important materials available to the garden is topsoil. Such materials provide plants with ideal conditions in which to grow and provide the plants with many of the nutrients that they require to flourish. However, choosing topsoil is not always easy with so many different options available and each soil being specialised for a particular application. Soils vary according to the grade of the material, according to the nutrients and organic materials that are added and according to any treatments that are applied to the soil itself.

Prior to being sold to the general public topsoil is usually passed through screening equipment which removes stones and other unwanted materials. The result of this process is the aptly named ‘screened topsoil’. The grade of the soil that is produced is large dependent on the equipment that is used within the screening process. The grade of the soil is often denoted by a figure in millimetres; the lower the number, the smaller the material. Lower grades of topsoil are by definition of a higher quality and therefore attract a higher price. The resulting soil is for general use within the garden where no specific requirements are necessary.

A number of different types of topsoil have various nutrients and organic materials added to them prior to sale. These types of soil are ideally suited to providing for flowering plants and high yield vegetables. Such topsoil naturally provides the plant or the vegetables with all of the nutrients and goodness that they require without the use of artificial products or chemicals. These soils are ideally suited for more serious gardeners who wish to create a lush floral display or wish to enjoy a high yield from their vegetables.

Other topsoil is treated using specialised equipment prior to sale in order to achieve a particular result. For example, some soils are heat treated using flames at a high temperature which not only dries out the topsoil but also destroys a high percentage of unwanted natural weed seed that is often found within the soil. Such a soil is ideal for professional gardeners when the quality of the soil is of the utmost importance. Heat treated topsoil is generally used for greenhouse or indoor planting where the presence of weeds would be that much more noticeable and problematic.

When choosing topsoil it is important to take into account the different grades that are available, the different levels of additives that can be chosen and the various treatments which can be used. Depending on the individual requirements of the gardener each topsoil has a specific application whether it is used as a general garden soil, to produce lush blooming flowers or high yield vegetables or even for indoor or greenhouse planting. It is important that gardeners choose topsoil which is most suited to the particular task that is being undertaken and therefore produce the best chance of creating a flourishing, lush, blooming garden that the gardener can take pride in.
